Cheers everyone, just a quick note from me today.
A few months ago, I stumbled across a well-written and interesting music newsletter here on Substack.
seemed to be writing about the stuff that I live for: Outsider and experimental music, ambient, weird electroacoustic compositions, some electronic music. But he added another angle as well, coming from a metal/punk background. I can totally relate to that, as I do look back on a similar phase in my early musical biography. That’s why when he asked me a couple of weeks ago if I wanted to add a few words to an unfinished post about early dubstep and the South London scene, I didn’t think twice. We had spoken about the subject before, and we love similar stuff: Burial, DMZ, Skream, early James Blake remixes. So I added a short introduction about a dubstep night in Munich’s Rote Sonne in 2007, and a list of 10 legendary dubplates/12-inches from the 2005–2009 era which I still regard as the pinnacle of that music.
If you’re interested in the weird music I tend to write about, make sure to follow Lorenzo’s Substack as well. He’s very knowledgeable and an exceptional writing talent. I think we need more music writers like him – people that are willing to go deep and shine the light on weird niches instead of resorting to the common poptimist denominator, just because it promises clicks, jobs, and fame.
Hope you like the piece (link below).
Have a great week!
