Fascinating interview with this young musician and artist. Great questions Stephan. I do hear some wonderful introspective and more experimental works coming from the jazz world, but I have to agree that--at least in the academic environment which is largely how young players learn the genre now--the focus is on chops, theory, and mainstream repertoire. I knew Jim Black when I lived in New York. He was on the avant garde scene...I recall he played with Oscar Noriega among others. Wishing Ludwig great success in his career!
I love the idea of demo as final version. "The music loses so much when you try to make it sound perfect. It needs mistakes and fragility." Amen to that.
Wonderful read, thank you for taking the time to capture this!
