Something exceptional will need to be released to knock billy woods from my “Album of the Year” spot. He’s been knocking it out of the park for the last few years but GOLLIWOG is a truly spectacular record. Liking the Purelink too, thanks for the suggestion
I so relate to this! ( ...for me it was more Miley Cyrus than Britney Spears... ) As a radio DJ, and when I was first writing music reviews for Brainwashed, I thought I HAD to be at least a bit of a music snob. Even so, and even now when I am making a mix for Imaginary Stations on shortwave or filling in on Trash Flow Radio, I will try to put in some of my "guilty pleasure" tunes to make some heads turn. And I get it about the bandwagon... I haven't watched Game of Thrones for this very reason. I still feel this way very often, though similar to you, have mellowed with the years and am not as reactively this way. (Meditation helps with that!) But I do think some of my "training" in music writing and radio has given me a critical ear when I do listen to music that is making waves.
I felt compelled to write about this emo-ish group idialedyournumber as part of my own contrarian tendency, because you know emo. I liked the record, anyway, and wasn't the only one, even though it is pretty below the radar. Perhaps it really is a good strategy to wait and write about the hyped records until the dust settles. There is the drive within the culture to be so on top of all the new music, and no one can really keep up with it anyway as you pointed out in another recent piece. Might as well take our time and listen deeply and intently when we do.
Thanks so much for highlighting the Vitiello/Canty/Rowe record, Stephan! Purelink and billy woods make for some pretty rarefied company, too.
You’re likely only missing Chat Pile now, eh? 🤘🏻
Mate, I literally just had to google Chat Pile.
A different kind of ambient.
Thanks, Stephan 🙂↕️
I very much relate. Looking forward to digging into your recommendations.

Thanks Stephan! I have added these three albums to my “To Listen To” playlist. 🙌🏼
